The notes are divided into two sections. First, recounting the intention of this chapter: the upper two sentences refer to the previous chapter. Delineating by matter is done to reveal specific marks. The three sentences from 'reaching' downward give rise to this chapter. Saying 'comprehensively explains' is to show the general principle. Thus, both chapters take the prātimokṣa as their source, but the previous one was a specific explanation, whereas this one is based on a general discussion. Hence, 'discriminating' directly reveals the chapter's intent. 'Discriminating' means selecting: the preceding 'Concomitant Marks' is what is selected, and the seven sections of this chapter are what selects. Or it may be said: discussing maintenance and violation should properly belong to the same chapter; but with regard to the general principle, the specifics are explained subsequently, hence it says 'discriminating.' From 'if' downward, it next discerns the sequence. The order of connection means the sequential progression of cause and effect. In conventional composition, one treats the general first and the specific later; for instance, both the *Precept Commentary* and the *Karma Commentary* first set forth the general principle and afterward explain the specific text. The present work reverses this, and thus specifically points it out, with the intention of making it easier for new students to gain understanding.
