In maintaining by action, under 'capable of study' and 'prescribed gate', first a general heading. From 'Procedures...' onward, specific explanation; in the preceding explanation of procedures, the first clause gives a general presentation. The lower two clauses provide a further explanation. Saying 'Vinaya Piṭaka' further divides into two classes: First, generally gathering the three kinds of karmans of prescribed action: Community procedures (saṃgha-dharma), such as ordination, boundary demarcation, poṣadha, pravāraṇā, disciplinary measures, admonition, confession, and expulsion, etc. (Determining staff and water-bag, etc., are under the gate of permission.) Face-to-face procedures, namely varṣā residence, reliance (niśraya), holding robes, blessing medicines, and the like. (Declaring purity for robes and medicines, etc., belong to the gate of permission.) Mental determination, such as the six recollections, self-reproach, and so forth. Second, generally gathering the two types of practice, communal and shared: apart from karmans, the practices prescribed across the various skandhakas of the Vinaya, such as the sections on 'Master and Disciple', 'Monastic Administration', 'Robes and Bowls', and 'Guarding Deportment', which universally contain prescriptions and permissions, fully detailed as in both the upper and lower fascicles. 'Practice means counteraction': such as contemplating robes, food, dwellings, and medicines at the appropriate times; and being constantly of single mind in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, and the like. Next, under clarifying factual affairs: it is no different from the prescribed action of maintaining by cessation above, but taking actual construction and cultivation as the primary position here. (Following this, there are also prescribed action and prescribed cessation, but because cessation was treated in the preceding gate, it is not differentiated here.)
