Under the second [part], first is the question. As for "how many kinds," discussing the various teachings generally, what is stated is indeterminate: according to the object, following prohibition, in terms of rank (the five, eight, ten, and full precepts), isolating the essence (action and non-action), or pairing with the seven paths of action, or synthesizing the three karmas, or dividing prohibitive and natural [offenses], or based on reception and subsequent [practice]. Since there are many such differences, the question is posed generally. In the answer, first, the measure is shown according to the object. From "Now..." downward, the essentials are cited to encompass all. Now, precisely clarifying the essence, these two are the essentials; therefore, they are singled out. "Comprehensively encompassing all" is because these two precepts proactively guard against [transgression] and are subsumed within the comprehensively generated essence. This encompasses the dharma-essence, yet speaking of "object" is because one wishes to clarify that the dharmas of distinct objects all return to the two precepts.
