三出體中。法體幽微，頗涉言論；但鈔為新學，直申正理；文義簡略，致多謬妄。此既律教之源，復是修行之本；事須廣釋，少資心用。標云體狀，謂體之相狀，無別所以。

Under the third, "Presenting the essence": The dharma-essence is subtle and abstruse, touching considerably upon debate. However, the Manual was written for new students and directly sets forth the correct principle; its text and meaning being concise and brief, many errors and misunderstandings resulted. Since this is the source of the Vinaya teaching and the root of cultivation and practice, it is necessary to explain it extensively to slightly aid the mind's application. The heading states "essential characteristics," meaning the characteristics of the essence, with no other reason.
