In [the section] revealing the present [work], there are two parts. First, it recounts the composition. The first phrase directly indicates it: 'fixing the fundamental classes' means the distinctions among the six deśanās do not become confused; 'standardizing the mind and object' means each reveals its conditioned factors without ambiguity. In any single deśanā, though there are many conditioned factors, they do not go beyond mind and object. As shown below, lamenting faults and disclosing them is the mind capable of deśanā; relying on places, confronting persons, and using procedures all belong to the objects confronted. 'Ge' (standardize) is glossed as 'correct.' The lower two phrases reveal the intent. The upper phrase clarifies that establishing the procedures has a standard: when comparing the present and the past, right and wrong become clear as in a mirror. The lower phrase indicates that the implementation of actions is free from doubt: when mind and object illuminate each other, gain and loss become manifest. 'Subject and object' refers precisely to mind and object. The subsequent two phrases explain the above two phrases across alternate clauses, as can be seen upon examination. From 'then what...' downward, it next demonstrates the efficacy and benefit: it clarifies that by relying on the Dharma now, offenses are certain to be eradicated and the mind has something to rely upon; reversing the previous contravention of the Vinaya where repented offenses were not expunged and subjective fabrications lacked foundation, it says 'what need is there to worry,' and so forth. 'Praised by the sages' is because it accords with the Buddha's words. The subsequent phrase, 'therefore...', cites the Vinaya to demonstrate the praise, because it designates those capable of deśanā as wise persons.
