In the concluding exhortation, the first part concludes and indicates. The depth or shallowness of the principle depends on the strength or weakness of one's capacity; one should assess one's own standing and cultivate according to one's ability. However, in the final age, minds are dimmed, and sharp faculties are rarely encountered; people are not yet capable of phenomenal practice, let alone focusing their intent on the profound gate; the subtle words of the three contemplations are almost entirely cut off here. Alas! 'Therefore...' cites proofs below. The first line of the Avataṃsaka verse shows the marks of sin. 'All' summarizes the ten unwholesome actions. Because they can obstruct the wholesome path, they are called 'hindrances.' Surging like deep and vast waves, they are therefore compared to an 'ocean.' The next line shows their source of arising. Failing to understand consciousness-only and grasping at the objective realms before one is 'deluded thought.' The lower half of the verse shows the repentance method. The upper line seeks the faculty; the lower line shows the method. 'One should seek' shows the contemplating wisdom. 'True mark': if spoken of in general, it covers the above three principles; if according to the sutra's intent, it specifically lies in consciousness-only; hence below it is called the 'great deśanā.' The original text read: 'Sit upright and be mindful of the true mark.' Sitting upright is quieting the conditions; mindfulness is the contemplating [wisdom]. 'As follows...' concludes with praise. According to the sutra, it continues: 'Multitudes of sins are like frost and dew; the sun of wisdom can eliminate them. Therefore, one should with devoted mind diligently repent the sins of the six sense faculties.' The first half shows its superior merit; the second half encourages diligent cultivation.
