2.2055

《涅槃》文為三，初示罪報。若下，二明犯心，初約護法說破為不破。善業勝故，犯心輕故；此據化教，故言不破；若約制教，還即成破。亦欲進彼護法者故。未捨遠者，謂於佛法猶戀慕故。若犯下，次約壞法說為犯。言多過咎，即說佛法中多過失故。一闡提此云無信。云下，三示悔法，初標問。謂下，答釋，初明懺者現報即受。所謂轉重為輕也。橫謂非橫，羅猶墮也。若下，明不懺者生報方受。彼經云：若不觀身無常，名不修身；不觀戒是善梯隥，名不修戒；不觀心躁動制伏，名不修心；不觀智慧有力能斷，名不修慧。

The passage from the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra has three parts. First it shows the retribution of sin. 'If...' secondly clarifies the mental state of violation: first, explaining breaking as non-breaking from the standpoint of protecting the Dharma. Because the wholesome karma is superior and the mental state of violation is light, according to the transforming teaching it is said not to be broken; but according to the regulatory teaching, it still constitutes breaking. It is also because of wishing to encourage those who protect the Dharma. 'Not having abandoned or distanced oneself' means that one still yearns for the Buddha-Dharma. 'If violating...' next explains it as a violation from the standpoint of destroying the Dharma. Saying 'many faults and errors' means speaking of many faults within the Buddha-Dharma. Icchantika is translated here as 'without faith.' 'How...' thirdly shows the repentance method, first posing the question. 'Meaning...' answers and explains: first, clarifying that one who repents receives the retribution in the present life. This is what is called turning the heavy into the light. 'Untoward' means not untoward; 'ensnared' means fallen. 'If...' clarifies that one who does not repent receives retribution only in a future life. That sutra says: 'If one does not contemplate the body as impermanent, it is called not cultivating the body; if one does not contemplate precepts as a good ladder, it is called not cultivating precepts; if one does not contemplate the mind's agitation to subdue it, it is called not cultivating the mind; if one does not contemplate wisdom as having the power to sever, it is called not cultivating wisdom.'
