Next, explaining the deśanā ritual. In distinguishing differences: the first section quotes the original text of the Vinaya. 'Various [masters]...' below shows the determinations of past and present masters: first, pointing out the errors of the ancients. The ancient interpretation of 'completely without concealment' was that an exception is granted only if, from the time of violation onward, there was never a single thought of concealment, and if there was, no exception is granted; furthermore, seeing that the deśanā ritual in the Vinaya arose through the condition of committing unchaste conduct, they then claimed that an exception to repent is granted only for unchaste conduct, whereas the other grave offenses do not admit of exceptions; hence it says 'there were mutual rights and wrongs.' 'Now...' below sets forth the present interpretation: the first two sentences show the intention of the teaching. Establishing the teaching to receive faculties must not obstruct them; hence it says 'the principle contains no stagnation or blockage.' 'Only...' below, second, clarifies the correct interpretation. It means that if one previously committed multiple offenses, all must be completely repented; hence it simply says 'completely without concealment.' 'Not...' below, third, distinguishes [the difference with] saṃghāvaśeṣa, where one is allowed not to repent completely. The text also has three parts: first, directly showing the difference. 'First...' below compares the reasons why the two classes differ. Generally there are three distinctions: first, committing a grave offense fundamentally ruins [the precept-essence]; second, repentance springs from one's own mind; third, one is pressured into confessing all completely; saṃghāvaśeṣa is the reverse of the above. The phrase 'having a remainder' reverses the first point above; receiving a reinforced karma reverses the second point above; repenting in accordance with what is hidden or manifest reverses the third point above. 'There are...' below concludes and indicates. 'Various differences' refers to the contradiction of the above three meanings. 'Two rituals' directly refers to the difference in the deśanā rituals between the two classes.
