In [the section on] returning the robes, under the analysis: the initial text makes two determinations, provisionally based on a coarse division. If one follows the Precept Commentary, then there are many distinctions. It states: Among the thirty precepts, silk-padded robes and the two treasures—these three precepts are not [forfeited] facing the Saṅgha (the silk-padded robe is cut and destroyed, and the two treasures are given to laypeople); twenty-seven precepts are forfeited facing the Saṅgha. Four precepts are returned immediately: the two relinquishments and the two kinds of wool, because they do not defile each other. (The two relinquishments are [incurred with] thullaccaya; the two kinds of wool refer to black and white; all four are Dharma-robes, so there is no fault of defilement.) Although seven-day medicines are defiling, they are prohibited from being used beyond one's body, and are also returned on the same day (surplus medicine). Four precepts are returned after passing a night, because storing is continued. (Ten days, full moon, urgent gift, and surplus bowl, which together with the aforementioned surplus medicine make the five surpluses.) The remaining eighteen precepts, which are separately forfeited, do not require passing a night, because they do not involve greedy accumulation. (The above is the text of the commentary.) Now, to clarify the five surpluses: following the earlier Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā, one only requires the cessation of keeping, not necessarily passing a night; if based on returning after a night, that follows the base Vinaya; but since the world mostly adheres to this rigidly, it must be pointed out and refuted. Therefore, in the two commentaries the five surpluses are all returned after passing a night, and the text below here likewise continues to follow the old.
