釋妨中，初問者。《業疏》標云如昔所傳，則知古來相承此語。毘尼，即七滅諍；前因諍起，乃用法滅，即殄已起也；已起，即是過去。據此，止可言戒但防未來；而兼過去，豈非相違，故須決破。

In resolving objections, the first question: the *Karma Commentary* notes, "As traditionally transmitted of old," so we know this statement has been handed down from antiquity. Vinaya refers to the seven ways of settling disputes; disputes having arisen previously, one applies the Dharma to extinguish them, which is destroying what has already arisen; what has already arisen is the past. Based on this, one can only say that precepts merely prevent the future; yet how does combining with the past not conflict? Hence it must be definitively resolved and refuted.
