In the preliminary presentation, the first two lines explain its vast pervasiveness. From 'To state the essential' downward, he gives the essentials in brief; first he presents them generally. From 'According to' downward, he distinguishes them individually. First he explains the six great elements, which encompass both sentient and non-sentient; next he treats the six sensory objects, which are non-sentient; below he treats the six destinies and so forth, which are sentient. Regarding the 'intermediate existence', the Karma Commentary asks: 'Outside of birth in the six destinies, is there still any arising [of precepts]?' It answers: 'The Tathāgata is not subsumed within the destinies, and the intermediate existence is likewise so. The Heart Commentary states: "The four kinds of birth encompass all destinies; the intermediate existence is not subsumed within the destinies; because a destiny has the meaning of arrival, whereas the intermediate existence merely transmits consciousness."'
