In the third [section], previously 'zhaoti' (cāturdiśa) was mentioned; fearing that its characteristics might be obscure, a special question is raised. In the answer, it first cites two passages from sūtras. First, it cites Ānanda's transfer of donation, where the terminology is very clear. The Commentary states: 'The Madhyama-āgama says: "Donating rooms for the cāturdiśa Saṅgha" refers to donating individual rooms. This means the donor sets up rooms and donates them to the Saṅgha of the ten directions, providing for them separately; because it does not involve the permanent property of the monastic assembly, there is consensus and sending; yet it is not a private room, hence it is called cāturdiśa permanent property.' Next, it cites the donation by the woman Āmrapālī, namely the daughter of King Bimbisāra, who poured water from a golden pitcher and said to the Buddha: 'All the most excellent gardens and parks in the city of Vaiśālī are offered to the Buddha.' This must have been the very first donation of a park, hence it is said to be 'the first'. From 'the text' onward, it makes a decisive determination. Saying 'unclear' means that it only speaks of donating a park, so its specifics are not obvious. Regarding 'according to this', etc., because a park must contain rooms, buildings, flowers, fruits, and other things, two determinations are made. As for 'saṅghamālā', the present Transactions Manual temporarily adopts the sense of stringing flowers and fruits into a garland. The Commentary states: 'The "saṅghamālā property" in the sūtra (the name appears in the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]) is the original Sanskrit pronunciation; rendered into the Tang language, it means "face-to-face property", which is simply a direct donation made in presence. The manual cites the ancient explanation regarding flowers and fruits, which follows the characters to show the appearance, but contradicts the actual meaning of the matter.' (Commentary text). According to this, when the sūtra speaks of cāturdiśa in the donation of a park, it merely refers specifically to the rooms and buildings.
