The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya has three parts. First, it clarifies the universal and restricted aspects of gathering firewood. The warm chamber is what is now called the heating pavilion. Gathering dry and withered [wood] is to protect against harming living beings. From 'if the Saṅgha' onward, second, it shows the expedient means for cutting trees: either the Saṅgha needs to use it, or it is in an obstructive location; under these two conditions, cutting and using it is permitted. Fish bones and ash water are harmful to living trees. When employing a kappiyakāraka, one must designate pure handling. From 'if Saṅgha fields' onward, third, it permits exchange.
