In the sequential explanation, the first text: citing the Vinaya: strictly demarcating from the first to the last, it completely encompasses the marks of killing. In the interlinear note, from the beginning to "basis" explains the "first consciousness" above. The Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra says: at the stage of the kalala (here translated as "turbid impurity"; seven days after entering the womb, its form is like curdled butter, namely coagulated slippery substance), there are three things: first, life; second, warmth; third, consciousness. Inhalation and exhalation are life; not smelling foul and not decaying is warmth (karma maintains the fire element so the matter does not rot); herein, mind, intellect, and consciousness constitute consciousness. If the coagulated slippery substance is destroyed, the basis of consciousness is destroyed, and life and warmth fade away along with it; this is then called committing killing. Down to "…and so forth", it explains the "last consciousness" above. This means that when the four elements are about to dissolve and the conscious spirit has not yet departed, killing it also constitutes a grave offense. The commentary says: wherever there is warmth, consciousness is within it; the place where consciousness resides is encompassed by the life faculty. From "Its…" downward, it indicates an abbreviation.
