罪數中，引論。五十二罪者，十三根本，一一各有三方便故，吉羅為遠，下蘭為次，中蘭為近。胝字，竹尼反。

In the number of offenses, citing the treatise: the fifty-two offenses are because the thirteen fundamentals each have three preparatory stages; duṣkṛta is the distant, lower sthūlātyaya is the intermediate, and middling sthūlātyaya is the proximate. The character *zhi* (胝) is pronounced *zhu* and *ni* combined.
