In the third, there are also three parts: First, not receiving [extra robes] incurs no offense, because there is no distinct extra. The two offenses of missing and damaging are incurred progressively day by day. From 'if' downwards, using extra robes for formal determination: the upper part clarifies that formal determination nullifies the pure relinquishment. 'Having no protection against extra' is because pure relinquishment originally protects against extra robes, and now they are no longer extra. The lower part clarifies that relinquishing the formal determination requires repeating the formula, for fear that one might think it was already purified and thus not needed afterwards. From 'further' downwards, designating [a robe] makes it not an extra robe, because it enters the number of the three robes. Question: Does one later use adhiṣṭhāna or not? Answer: Designating only exempts it from being an extra robe; it is not immediate adhiṣṭhāna. Therefore we know that once the robe is completed, one separately performs adhiṣṭhāna. Below, with respect to the cubit measure, it clarifies the limit of non-dharma robes outside the measure. The text mentions one robe; the other two follow by analogy. 'Xiè' (褻) originally had the sound xiè; the character should be 'xiè' (褻), pronounced dié, which means cloth or silk.
