In the question: Because of the month-long robe [allowance], from the eleventh day to the twenty-ninth day, whenever it is sufficient it is completed; having exceeded ten days, no further exception is permitted; merely by chalking lines, cutting, and stitching, one avoids the fault of an extra robe (because one then performs adhiṣṭhāna). This then contradicts the above designating and making, so they must be harmonized. In the answer, it makes two distinctions based on whether one previously had [a robe] or not: first, it clarifies the month-long robe. That was because a monk who had only three robes had his saṅghāṭī become worn out and could not manage within ten days, whereupon one month was permitted; therefore we know clearly that he originally had one. From 'above' downwards resolves the above designating and making, which does not permit what was originally possessed.
