In explaining the second [heading], the eight categories of non-contamination, it first details the first category. The phrasing in the vinaya is rather complex; those who need it may consult it themselves. There are ten sections there. In the first section, one obtains [cloth] on all ten days; the Transactions Manual does not present it here. In the second section, one fails to obtain [cloth] on only one day, which has nine clauses. When the Manual says "on the second day one does not obtain," this cites the first clause; the text says: on the first day one obtains, on the second day one does not obtain, and from the third up to the tenth day one obtains; all [the cloth] obtained during the nine days is niḥsargika-pācattika. (The seven intermediate clauses are omitted and included within "up to"; for instance, saying: on the first day one obtains, on the second day one obtains, on the third day one does not obtain, reducing by one day clause by clause in this manner.) As for "up to the eleventh day," this cites the ninth clause. (It should be "tenth day"; the character is an error. Many in the world misunderstand this because they do not check the text.) The text says: on the first day, second day, third day, up to the ninth day one obtains, on the tenth day one does not obtain; all the robes obtained during the nine days are niḥsargika-pācattika. (Below this in the vinaya: for eight days one obtains and for two days one does not obtain, up to the last, where for one day one obtains and for nine days one does not obtain; there are eight sections in total, which the Manual completely omits, only clarifying the first and last two clauses of the second position, and the rest can be known.) Provided that there is a day on which one does not obtain cloth, there is no contamination, hence it says that in all such cases there is no offense. Below, it concludes what precedes and marks what follows; hence it speaks generally of eight categories. "Lacking the conditions of the dharma" means that it is not an exception among the eight categories. From "The second" down, it lists the remaining seven categories. (The formation of clauses is entirely identical to the preceding, fully presented as elsewhere.) The fourth is being robbed or lost. The fifth is being burned or swept away by water, so the notes make it clear. *Zhuo* means to burn. In the sixth, turning it into hats or socks does not enter the category of an extra [robe]. As for the eighth, in the notes, the first sentence is a general heading; the next two sentences provide specific explanations, and the latter sentence establishes the exception by analogy.
