In revealing the faults, there are two parts. First, revealing the gravity of the fault: the cause of prohibition was cited earlier. The Vinaya is secret and superior, not permitted to be heard by outsiders. Only this [precept] addresses laypeople, the intent being as clear in the text. The Vinaya says: The Buddha told the great ministers, "If you see a śramaṇa, a disciple of the Śākya clan, who takes me as his teacher yet receives gold, silver, money, and jewels, you should know with certainty that he is not a disciple of the Śākya clan." Next, from "hence" downward, the four afflictions are shown: alcohol, sexual misconduct, money and jewels, and wrong livelihood. These four are not found only in our own Vinaya, hence they are referred to broadly. "This precept is one of them" means it is one among the four afflictions. "Not a disciple": this is the Tathāgata's profound and earnest admonition. All who hold [money] should reflect deeply on themselves. Below, the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya is cited to explain the meaning of "not a disciple" above. From "due to" downward, next the general designation is explained. Cultivating greed means the mind is impure; defiling one's practice is karma, which is impurity of cause; the foul fruition is impurity of retribution. From "the remainder" downward points to the subsequent sections.
