In explaining the marks, regarding the enumeration: the sixth directly pertains to this precept, while the rest are explained collaterally. In the eighth, regarding "and various valuable articles," the Commentary states: things which the Buddha did not allow, such as women, weapons, and the like. Below, concluding and pointing out: first, it explains their provenance in the Tripiṭaka. They are merely called the "eight impurities," "eight venomous snakes," "eight taints," and so forth. Although the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] enumerates the various items, it lacks this sequence, hence it is called a "general enumeration." The revelation of their faults as impermissible is fully cited below. From "successively transmitted" downward, it clarifies that the sequence is enumerated following the ancients. The Commentary states: as eight designations have been handed down from antiquity, one must know the eight marks; hence it says they do not come from the Buddhist sūtras.
