In the next section, reprimanding abuses: First, it describes the intention of coveting and keeping. Within is the intention, without is the conduct. Not reflecting on the noble admonitions is disrespecting the Dharma; indulging greed and ignorance is being self-indulgent. Hence below, it cites proofs. First, it cites the root Vinaya, demonstrating the loss of precepts accordingly: 'Not a disciple' means not receiving the teacher's instruction; 'not a samaṇa' means not cultivating pure conduct; 'not a son of the Śākyas' means not belonging to the noble lineage. Nowadays, many receive and keep [wealth], which is rejected by the teachings; though they shave their heads and dye their robes, they are disciples of Māra and non-Buddhists. Below, 'further says' quotes the Buddha's words to the minister Maṇicūḍa. Next, it cites the Saṃyuktāgama: The five desires are not wholesome merits, nor are they pure. Now keeping wealth and precious substances is precisely following desire; if receiving and keeping them were permitted, they would conversely become merits and should also be pure. This shows that leaving home is about severing desires to seek the Path; to be bound by desires instead is deeply improper. Afterwards, it cites the Ekottarikāgama: There it says that the brahmadatta Chaoshu wished to offer gold coins to Dīpaṅkara Buddha; he reflected to himself, 'I have a book titled the Book of Rites which says: If one is a Tathāgata, he will certainly not receive gold or precious items'; thereupon he exchanged them for five stalks of lotus flowers to offer to that Buddha. (Śākyamuni's causal practices obtained the prophecy from this.) Hence below, it concludes by showing the intention behind citing these. The previous text's accounts of admonitions are all based on sincere teachings, hence it says 'not an abuse'.
