In explaining the root precept: The first section. Because the old Prātimokṣa says, 'If one takes coins with one's own hand, or gold and silver, etc.', the phrasing is confused with the subsequent precept, so it must be clarified. In the Revised Precepts, 'taking' is changed to 'receiving', and then there is no confusion. As for 'the intention at another time': speaking of 'taking' within the context of storing incurs the subsequent precept. According to this, four propositions are formed: (1) keeping but not taking, which violates only the former precept (instructing another person to accept it verbally); (2) taking but not keeping, which violates only the subsequent precept (touching one's own purified precious items or others' precious items, holding a gold image, etc.); (3) both keeping and taking, violating both the former and subsequent precepts (receiving it by hand and keeping it); (4) neither, incurring no violation (lawfully receiving purification).
