In explaining the fourth [text], the first section has three parts. First, determining the names and entities: that [Vinaya] regards gold, silver, and money as major treasures, designated 'impure articles'; other precious items are designated 'pure/impure articles'. First, it clarifies major treasures, listing only three kinds, whereas the *Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā* prohibits all seven treasures, which is different from this; that they 'must not be touched' indicates the meaning of impurity. Next, it explains the other precious items, which, excluding the three items above, universally encompass all [other treasures]. Saying that they 'may be touched' is because touching them is not prohibited. That they 'must not be kept' is because keeping them is prohibited in the same way; keeping them refers to greedily hoarding them, and hoarding them incurs a duṣkṛta offense. Next, from 'If' down, it explains the marks of violation. First, it generally clarifies major treasures. From 'If the marks' down, it specifically shows the entity of coins: 'made of marks' refers to money made of Persian gum, leather, wood, and the like, as well as pewter and tin in this land; if they are indeed used as currency in a country, they also incur a pāyattika offense. Third, from 'If generally' down, it shows the procedure for receiving: 'letting the purificant know' means either first having him receive it, or immediately performing the procedure. 'If none' means there is no purificant. 'Temporarily placing it on the ground' and uttering 'know within this' is the formula of purification. As for 'ordering him to know and take it away': if he is not trustworthy, one has him take it and hand it over to someone else, merely saying 'know this'; if he is trustworthy, one immediately has him take custody of it and hold it; one must perform the purification procedure, the words of which appear in the next section.
