Next, in [the section on] performing purification, the *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya* contains the text on forfeiting property already violated in the presence of a layperson. According to the commentary, it is divided into four sections: the first sentence refers back to the previously prohibited fault. Second, from 'Telling' down, it clarifies the expedient means of forfeiting the money, which is to seek out a pure owner and hand it over. Third, from 'If that' down, it refers to failing to understand the intention of giving: because the Buddha required purification, he ordered him to receive it; because he does not understand, he does not dare to receive it immediately, which contravenes the method of pure giving. 'One should receive it on behalf of that article' means that since it has already been forfeited to him, it now belongs to him. 'If to trade for robes one must change what is received' is because the previous purification procedure did not succeed. Fourth, from 'If that' down, this concerns understanding the intention: one takes it directly and returns it for purification, without needing to convert it. Next, from 'If' down, it specifically clarifies the words of purification. The commentary states: 'Look at this' means looking at the money and treasure; 'know this' means 'it is not mine; I give it to you for purification—how can you not say so?' Failing to perform the procedure incurs a duṣkṛta.
