答中，初文為二，初示數不定。約，即略也。通言，即僧尼兩數。論下，次顯略所以，初通明體量。且下，別示兩數，初明僧戒。蹊徑即小路。律下，示尼戒。戒是能防，過是所防，戒通過別；從別為言，故云所防。

In the answer, the first text has two parts: first, it shows that the number is not fixed. 'To summarize' (yue) means to abridge. 'General statement' refers to the two numbers for bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs. From 'The treatise...' onward, it next reveals the reason for the abridgment: first, it comprehensively clarifies the essence and quantity. From 'For now...' onward, it separately shows the two numbers: first, it clarifies the bhikṣu precepts. 'Pathways' (xijing) means narrow paths. From 'The Vinaya...' onward, it shows the bhikṣuṇī precepts. Precepts are what can prevent, and faults are what is prevented; precepts are general while faults are specific; speaking from the perspective of the specific, it is therefore said 'what is prevented'.
