Under non-offense: first, 'exceeding seven days' refers to medicine received on the first day reaching the eighth day; possessing all faults, it is not proper for the Saṅgha to eat, so it is given to the monastery attendant. 'The seventh day' refers to what was received on the second day; since there is no overnight touch and the oral procedure still remains, the Saṅgha is permitted to eat it. Regarding 'the third, not yet full', this refers to what was received on the third day, only reaching six days; the duration of the procedure has not been exceeded, so in principle it should be declared pure; but having incurred an offense through contagion, it cannot be consumed again, and may only be used externally. The first is what can contaminate; the lower two are what are contaminated, hence the three distinctions. According to this method of confessing the offense and forfeiting the medicine, the reason it enters the permissible exceptions is that forfeiting or using it contrary to Dharma would both incur a duṣkṛta; this exempts from minor offenses, and therefore enters non-offense. 'Pivot-socket' means the socket of a door.
