In the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā, it first explains seeking and making. It states that from the middle of the third month to the end of the third month, one should make it; if one succeeds in making the robe, on the first day of the fourth month one should keep it (keeping it means using it); if one does not succeed in making the robe, even up to the middle of the fourth month one is permitted to seek and permitted to make it, hence it says 'even so,' etc. It also states: supposing one obtains it on the sixteenth day of the third month, and finishes it in one or two days, one may also keep and use it; evaluating this by the standard of our current school, this would directly commit the subsequent precept. Differences in sectarian positions cannot be harmonized; one must know that seeking is permitted throughout a whole month, whereas use is restricted to half a month, and they must not be conflated. Next, it explains the method of keeping it; first, it explains the original exception. 'Length' downwards explains the measurements of the robe. In the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, the length is six spans (diṣṭi), which is the same as that treatise; the width is two and a half spans, which is five chi. 'Because of the summer' downwards explains the intention behind the exception. Since it is for protecting the robes, one may use it to cover oneself from the rain, and not solely wear it for bathing. 'This bathing [robe]' downwards resolves an objection. Fearing one might say, 'How can a bath-robe be taken to cover oneself from rain?', it therefore explains this. If we go by the present precept, it is named 'rain and bath robe', meaning wearing it in the rain to bathe. Thus, the name in the Prātimokṣa-sūtra combines both while its application is narrow, whereas in the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā the name is narrow while its application is broad. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya does not permit other uses, which differs slightly from the treatise. 'If wearing' downwards refers to not using the standard robes, using an expedient means to avoid an offense.
