In the fifth part, it first narrates slander. They consider it a trivial matter, hence specifically pointing this out as being deficient in Vinaya studies. Under 'However...', it reproves their fault. Being ignorant of the teaching, they do not know that the purpose is profound; lacking compassion, they do not know they harm creatures; not thinking of liberation, they do not know it obstructs the Path. First, it rebukes not possessing one. Under 'Even if...', it next rebukes not using it. Under 'Although...', thirdly, it rebukes not guarding. The single practice of filtering water is extremely minute and delicate. Although people practice it, few are able to avoid transgressions. In the *Ritual for Instructing and Admonishing*, the text is extremely detailed and comprehensive; look for it there. Under 'Furthermore...', it laments. In the Vinaya, there are four matters: breaking precepts, breaking deportment, breaking right view, and breaking right livelihood. The marks of the precepts are coarse and manifest; the other three are subtle. Even the coarse ones are broken, let alone the other three; hence it says 'always submerged among them.'
