存亡中。《僧祇》，必在百二十里內。《五分》取知，不定近遠。《多論》，須在本國。然國境廣遠，但約州郡，不可相聞，理須別請。

Regarding being alive or deceased: In the *Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya*, it must be within one hundred and twenty li. The *Mahīśāsaka-vinaya* takes knowing as the criterion, without fixing the proximity or distance. The *Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā* requires being in the same country. However, national borders being vast and distant, if measured merely by prefectures and commanderies, mutual communication cannot occur, so in principle a separate formal request must be made.
