In citing texts, in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, the first section has four parts: first, mutual owing with respect to the Triratna. 'Should revert' means repaying the Triratna. 'Entering the present saṃgha' means that the expression for deciding where to collect is ambiguous, so it is specially annotated and revealed. Alternatively, earlier it was said that for permanent property owing heavy items, one need not demand them; now based on the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, the earlier meaning is decided. The above generally explains the Triratna. 'Down to...' separately mentions individuals within the saṃgha. All must be demanded and taken in, hence it says 'the same as above'. 'If...' next explains owing a debt for liquor. In the note, determining the saṃgha property above, one should take present items of the ten directions to repay it. Only if there are definitely no present items does one permit [using] the permanent property, hence it says 'according to circumstances'. Preventing ridicule and protecting the Dharma are weighty matters, hence an exception is granted. 'If previously...' thirdly explains mutually owing the price of robes. Saying 'none' means the robes are not present. 'Furthermore...' fourthly explains differences according to different places. The five lines of that Vinaya all have Upananda as the circumstance. In the first line, because the bhikṣus where the goods were deposited and where he died disputed with each other, the Buddha said the present saṃgha within the boundary where the goods were deposited should distribute them. In the second line, it says: Upananda had robes, bowls, and goods lent out at interest to people in various places (the places where debts were owed); he died in a different place, and the two places disputed with each other; the Buddha decided as in the text. (The upper two lines are disputes between two places; the lower three lines add one place each to the second line.) The third adds the place of guaranty, meaning a bhikṣu guaranteed and managed the lending of interest for him. The fourth adds the place of pawned items, meaning using wealth and goods to pawn to people in a different place. The fifth adds holding deeds and ledgers, meaning managing the accounts and ledgers for the owner of the wealth.
