In the Mātṛkā there are two rulings. The Ritual says: 'If originally intended to provide service for the rest of the life (meaning the master's life) and the handwritten deed is clear, according to the Mātṛkā he is released. If not released, he is of the two kinds among the preceding five that enter the saṃgha.' In the note: 'Judging by those released', since it requires that the agreement be clear, by reverse analogy those bestowed a surname who have not yet separated from their master generally have no fixed limit and must enter the permanent property. Therefore it says 'relying on the Vinaya', which refers to the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya above. 'When he finally dies' refers to when the bhikṣu passes away. That is what the text of the Ritual says: 'Originally of base rank, bestowed a surname to become a commoner, yet not having separated from the original master; if the master himself dies, he may enter the permanent property; the clothing, supplies, and livestock belonging to his person must not be reclaimed.'
