Next, in distinguishing fish and meat and citing the abrogation: first, the previous abrogated teaching is shown. Below "Nirvāṇa," next the later prohibition and severance are cited. Although it was prohibited prior to that, as in the Laṅkāvatāra and so forth, it merely pointed out the faults in general. The Nirvāṇa is the ultimate, directly serving to open and harmonize, which is why it is cited in particular; it comes from the "Tathāgatanature Chapter." First citing the text prior to abrogation: the first two lines establish the prohibition, and the next line teaches contemplating [it with] revulsion. The sūtra says: Like a husband and wife, taking along an only son, traveling together through a wilderness; their provisions and roots [of survival] exhausted, they kill their son and eat him; weeping tears as they consume him, without relishing its flavor; bhikṣus are also like this: if one now contemplates the flesh of all sentient beings like the flesh of one's own child, when giving rise to this thought, one will certainly not greedily eat it. Below "Now then," the faults and perils are revealed. Great compassion is the Buddha-mind; [eating meat] severs the seed of buddhahood in oneself and others. "Water, land, and airborne creatures" names the places to encompass the creatures; submerged, hidden, flying, or walking, none are excluded. Now those who eat meat, by harming their lives, become their mortal enemies. Below "The sūtra," next the text resolving the prior [teaching] is cited. It wishes to make clear that the previous teaching had no faults. The four births are womb-born, egg-born, moisture-born, and transformation-born. The sūtra says: For the sake of saving sentient beings, he manifested the eating of meat while in reality not eating it.
