In the general prohibition: wine and meat along with the five pungent roots. The text lacks xīngqú (hingu). Some say it is asafoetida; others say there is naturally a plant named xīngqú, with roots like radishes. Suàn is pronounced suàn; jiǔ is pronounced jiǔ; xiè is the fanqie hú-jiè; all are pungent vegetables. The Brahmajāla says: They must not be eaten in any food. The Śūraṅgama says: Eaten cooked they arouse lust, eaten raw they increase anger; in this world, even if a person who eats pungent roots can expound the twelve divisions of scripture, the heavenly immortals of the ten directions detest their foul odor and all stay far away; hungry ghosts and the like, taking advantage of their eating, lick their lips; they constantly dwell with ghosts, their blessings and virtues vanish day by day, and in the long run there is no benefit, and so forth.
