In the concluding rebuke, first it points to what was previously cited. 'According to the matter': the matter is precisely the object. 'Those identical with this school': this indicates that those that differ are not cited. 'Now...' below rebukes worldly non-Dharmic practices, first enumerating the errors. Saying 'not salty and bitter, obstructing the mouth' reveals that they are sweet, delicious, and pleasant to the mouth. 'Gé' (格) should properly be 'gé' (隔), meaning to obstruct. 'All...' below provides the direct rebuke; the first phrase refers to acting arbitrarily. The next phrase refers to relying on pretext and conflation. They claim that broths and medicines are permitted outside the proper time. 'Not...' below raises a comparison. Plain boiled rice has no extraordinary flavor and does not lead to greed and craving; therefore, it is cited to challenge them. (The foolish furthermore claim that the text of the Manual permits eating plain boiled rice, which is an error!) 'Citing...' below reveals the fault. Causing others to violate the precepts, one following another without end, is why it is called 'perpetuating worldly practice.' Since ensnaring others is such, the harm to oneself can be known. Nowadays, many make tuckahoe pills, shaped as large as a fist, and decoct Chinese yam soup, thick like congee; consuming them rashly outside the proper time, they falsely call it maintaining the fast. Verifying the mind through the facts is observing the fruit through the cause; one should know that this is precisely swallowing red-hot iron balls and drinking molten copper juice! One gains a momentary comfort, but for long kalpas it will be difficult to endure; if one has wisdom and reflects upon it, how could one indulge in greed?
