Next, clarifying 'pure ground': in 'Intention of the Prohibition,' first it shows generally that faculties and capacities are different. 'If...' below separately explains the differences in establishing the teachings. First, it narrates that superior capacities follow the prohibition. 'Piṇḍapāta' means alms-begging; the Jingyin yi says: 'The correct term is piṇḍapāta, translated here as lump-dropping; it means that when practicing alms-begging, the lumps of food drop into the alms bowl.' Next, it narrates that intermediate and inferior [capacities] require an exception. The phrase 'their feelings being identical' means that although their minds aspire to what is superior, their strength cannot reach it. Regarding 'dying of starvation': in the Medicinal Dharmas it says: 'At that time, there was a bhikṣu with vomiting and diarrhea who sent a person of the city of Śrāvastī to boil congee. At that time, due to circumstances, the city gate opened late, and before he could obtain the congee, he died. The bhikṣus reported this to the Buddha, and the Buddha said he permitted demarcating a pure ground within the saṅghārāma.'
