Under 'Explaining the Name,' first it explains directly. 'If...' below demonstrates by negation. Based on the Karma Commentary, because it possesses four meanings, it is only then called 'pure': first, increasing greed and fostering arrogance is called defiling the pure mind; second, worldly ridicule and slander from outside is called defiling pure faith; third, cooking overnight and generating offenses is called defiling pure precepts; fourth, receiving bitter retribution in the future is called defiling the pure fruit. 'This...' below prevents misinterpretation. The phrase 'in accordance with circumstances' is as explained above, merely taking the avoidance of faults as the standard; it is not in contrast to defilement, whereas the fools of the world mostly assume that it means the ground is defiled if not demarcated.
