Under 'Not Fully Enclosed,' in the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya: first, it relies on combining both fences and screens to clarify the three characteristics. Screens are objects such as wooden planks and walls. 'Partially existing' means having screens on two sides. 'Mostly absent' means existing on only one side. 'Completely absent' is as explained in the text. 'Not...' below shows the intention of the exception. In the interlinear note, 'a kitchen standing alone' means that although the monastery is not fully enclosed, the kitchen has its own courtyard. 'Walls...' below abbreviates and points to the remaining characteristics. Altogether, each of the above six types has three characteristics; the Commentary says that applying the text to the actual cases yields eighteen places. The interlinear note prevents doubt. It was feared that people would think only having walls on all four sides could constitute complete enclosure, and that when other objects were mixed in, they would consider it not fully enclosed; hence it states 'either made of,' and so forth.
