Question: They cite the Karma Commentary, which says: "The original binding of the pure ground encompasses food and obstructs people, hence it does not declare the original dwelling; furthermore, if it were declared, it is feared that the marks would pervade the interior with overnight stay, which would be worse than not binding at all." Is this not clear evidence? Answer: Because the two boundaries of the monk's [residence] and robes both state the two samenesses, while the pure ground does not state them, the Commentary therefore made this resolution. It was clearly explaining the method of specific binding of the Dharmaguptaka; now, this general binding originates from the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya. How can one use an explanation of this school's text on specific binding as an objection against the general binding of the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya? That is the first error. Furthermore, when the master Mahīśāsaka compiled this karmavācanā, did he not know of such defects as overnight stay and cooking? Why should he wait for people like you to delete and alter it? That is the second error. Furthermore, mentioning the two samenesses above precisely reveals the general binding; below, it inherently excludes [the dwellings], so how could there be the fault of overnight stay and cooking pervading the interior? That is the third error. Alas, those who are foolish and perverse are difficult to instruct in haste; should they preside over [the karmavācanā], it would definitely be judged invalid. They burden themselves and burden others, and from this the Dharma perishes. The Vinaya says: "To perform a motion not in accordance with the Dharma of motions, or to perform a karmavācanā not in accordance with the Dharma of karmavācanās, causes the True Dharma quickly to perish." It also says: "Such a bhikṣu brings no benefit to many people and enters hell like an arrow." Should one not fear this!
