Within the third [heading], the first [sub-heading] initially distinguishes the general from the specific. The note says, "Wormwood and grass have no purification method": the commentary says that just as in a plate of raw vegetables, recognizable seeds are mixed in; even if fire touches the recognizable [vegetables], the seeds are still not purified; recognizable seeds are separated from one another, and do not connect with one another; by analogy with other wormwood and grass, where there is separation it is not purified (the principle requires touching each one with fire). From "If non-glutinous rice..." onward, it next clarifies repeat purification. The note says "wrapped in white skin": this means today's pestle-milled white rice, which has no capacity for life, and so does not require purification. As for "or as in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya": it cites an event to illustrate; there, in a place without pure persons, it was permitted to purify, and having kept the rice for seven days, doing it oneself, etc. "Purification by fire and purification by knife": if it is the non-glutinous rice mentioned above, one only uses fire-purification; radishes generally admit both purifications.
