四中，初約物同一處，各處不得。此下，示淨法所以。沙門淨者，謂此作法令僧免過耳。準下，例通米穀。由同米聚，穀亦通淨，不名壞生。

Within the fourth [heading], the first [part] deals with items in one identical place; [if they are in] different places, it is not allowed. From "This..." onward, it shows the reason for the purification method. "Purified by a śramaṇa" means that performing this procedure merely frees the saṃgha from fault. According to what follows, by analogy it extends generally to rice and grains. Because it is in the same pile of rice, the grain is also generally purified, and is not called destroying living plant life.
