In distinguishing the marks of seeds, the first is a question. Next is the answer, which first indicates the marks of living things. The seven types are green, yellow, red, white, black, purple, and pale blue-green (the color of bluish-yellow). From "That which..." onward, it next explains living seeds. Those that can grow when separated from the earth are like willows and pomegranates, whose branches can be planted. "From conditions" means water and soil. Pointing to the vinaya's five types, these are roots, branches, joints, seeds, and miscellaneous seeds.
