In the fourth [part]: since the various vinayas lack a text [for this] yet the matter exists, it must be established by principle. Within the phrasing, there are six clauses: First, causing one to focus and examine, for fear of differing circumstances. Second, stating one's own name, distinguishing it from others; according to the rubric below, if one is severely ill and unable [to perform it oneself], another may perform the verbal authorization on one's behalf, in which case the ill person's name should be spoken. Third, stating the condition of illness, clarifying that it is not an indiscriminate pretext. Fourth, saying "ginger decoction," specifically indicating the substance of the medicine. Fifth, saying "the night watch," designating a fixed time limit. Sixth, receiving it before another, seeking a witness directly facing oneself. (The division of clauses in the two methods below is identical to this.) The note stating that if none is left over there is no need to perform the verbal authorization: because performing the verbal method is fundamentally for the sake of extending the time; if surely nothing will be retained, one merely receives it directly by hand. In the seven-day [medicine], first the eight afflictions are clarified. The reason for altering the eighth is that clarified butter, oil, and the like do not alter. Leftover medicine already violated is different from the aforementioned overnight leftover [food]; it is merely that having been received it has passed the night, not that it is already violated. (The old view dividing it into oneself and another is incorrect.)
