The next passage has five clauses. First, it explains the Buddha personally engaging in physical labor: when the Buddha was in the country of Āḷavī, seeing that the lintel of the monastery gate was damaged, he repaired it himself. From 'Saṃgha...' onward, it explains tools. From 'Monastic quarters...' onward, it discusses renovations and repairs. Next, from 'Monastic quarters...' onward, it ordains that senior monks should work personally to encourage others. Still fearing that they might rely on their status, it further cites Kāśyapa as an illustration. The Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā says: Śāriputra supervised the Jetavana monastery, and Maudgalyāyana supervised five hundred monasteries. That treatise asks: 'All these disciples had already accomplished what was to be done; why then did they still exert themselves and manage affairs to perform various meritorious karmas?' It answers: 'First, to repay kindness; second, to foster the Buddha-Dharma; third, to suppress ordinary, inferior sentient beings who perform small meritorious karmas and become arrogant; fourth, to subdue the proud and arrogant minds of future disciples; fifth, to inspire the meritorious karma of future sentient beings.' From 'Bhikṣu...' onward, it permits community service for the assembly. The upper character is read in the rising tone.
