"Counteracting" refers to the person who can receive, applying generally to the five assemblies; "offerings" refers to the articles received, encompassing the four requisites. "Arousing counteraction" is the wisdom that can contemplate, while the three poisons are the faults to be counteracted. Now, those who have left household life live in leisure and vastness, not engaging in farming or sericulture; the supporting conditions of the four requisites depend entirely on gifts of faith. Moreover, clothing for the body and food for the mouth are never not needed; if one can counteract [attachment] according to circumstances, one will give rise to supramundane goodness; but if one indulges desires in greed and defilement, one will sink down into the dark paths. In examining this single gate, it is exceedingly essential; unless one possesses lofty and preeminent discernment and upholds the intention of transcendence, then though facing each other across a thousand mountains, a mere foot's length becomes ten thousand leagues.
