In stating the intention, the initial text has four sections. The first two lines jointly designate the foundation of merit and the Path. Merit is wholesome karma, which necessarily arises from a superior object; thus it says, "arising from a pure field." There are three kinds of fields: the Triratna is the field of veneration, parents are the field of gratitude, and the poor and sick are the field of compassion. Although the name "field" is general, here in explaining the response to offerings, it specifically indicates the Saṃgha jewel. The essence of the Path is pure; having few desires accords with the Path and is the beginning of the Path, hence it says, "arising from few desires," which refers to practices such as the four dependences and the twelve dhūtas. The text from "For the sake of" onwards next indicates them separately; the first explains the first line. Because the field is pure, it arouses their intention to give; hence it says, "only weighty and only manifold." The text from "Receiving" onwards explains the second line. "Weighty" refers to the mind of restraint; "manifold or few" depends on the material objects. The text from "Abundant offerings" onwards thirdly explains accordance with the Dharma. The text from "The Vinaya" onwards fourthly cites proof.
