In the third: that sūtra says that the Buddha told Kāśyapa that the śrāmaṇera Cunda gathered scraps from among dung heaps and went to Lake Anavatapta to wash them; the devas all bowed to him from afar and took his wash-water to bathe themselves (the Karma Commentary says: "Because his mind was pure"); afterward, a non-Buddhist holding clean white cotton cloth was about to wash it; the devas barred him from afar: "Do not defile the lake!" (The Commentary says: "Because it was obtained through wrong livelihood, its substance was impure.") However, these rag robes are all discarded, fragmented pieces of cloth from worldly people, gathered and sewn together to make Dharma robes, in order to promote thrift, few desires, and fewer affairs; apart from this one quilted robe, there are no other possessions. Nowadays, the Chan crowd often makes patchwork gowns that are not Dharma robes; they cut up fine silks and embroider decorative patterns, calling them "landscape robes" and pricing them at several thousand [coins]; furthermore, they compete with one another in novelty, utterly violating thrift; manufacturing them over the years, they waste their time and effort in vain. As the Dharma degenerates with the times, the Path is lost along with secular affairs. This is falsely claiming superior practice and inappropriately presuming to be a dhūta. May those with discernment take this as a grave warning!
