In the seventh, the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra: 'a secluded place' is named in contrast to villages and settlements; three li is the absolute closest—if less, it does not qualify. Pointing to 'miscellaneous practices': the treatise says, 'Having attained physical seclusion, one should also cause the mind to be secluded from the five desires and five hindrances, and so on,' and extensively explains the twelve ascetic practices; search there to see it. (The text appears in fascicle 67; the fascicle divisions of the canon in this land are not uniform.) The Dharmaguptaka-vinaya: 'empty and quiet' is named with respect to the place itself. As for 'a thousand li': a bow is seven chi and two cun; one hundred bows are seventy-two zhang; five hundred bows make three hundred and sixty zhang; six chi make a pace; sixty zhang make one hundred paces; three hundred and sixty zhang make six hundred paces, which is two li. From 'In central India' onward, citing the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, it first shows the monastery regulations of that land. Fearing outrage and assault, nuns must reside inside the city. From 'Ten' onward, next it cites verification: tigers roaring around the monastery can verify that it is far from the city. 'Twelve hundred paces': three hundred paces make a li, so it is four li. The Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā: 'within the sound of a single drum', according to the explanation in 'Assembling the Saṃgha', is two li, which is quite the same as the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya. However, the various texts differ, so one should take our own school as the standard; as in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra above, the further away, the better.
