Next, in the intent of respect: it first inquires and indicates. The lines from "The Four-Part Vinaya..." down cite and explain. The passage comes from the "Dwelling Chapter," which says: At that time, the Buddha went with the bhikṣus wandering through the human realm from Rājagṛha to Vaiśālī. At that time, the ṣaḍvargikas went ahead to take rooms for their upādhyāyas, close friends, and so forth. At that time, Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana arrived later and could not get rooms to lodge in, so they slept upon a mound. Because of this, [the Buddha] assembled the community and rebuked and admonished them, as cited in the Manual. First, it cites the Buddha's inquiry. The lines from "The various..." down give the assembly's reply. The lines from "The Buddha..." down show his rebuke; here one sees the intent of the institution. The lines from "Extensively..." down cite the circumstances. It says: In the past there were three close friends: an elephant, a monkey, and a partridge (鵽 is pronounced like 刮 [guā]; the Erya commentary states: it is as large as a pigeon, also called a turtledove, or called a sparrow). They lived depending on a nyagrodha tree. They had this thought: "We live together; we should not fail to give rise to respect." They asked each other about how far back they could remember things. The elephant said: "I remember when I was young, this tree touched my navel." The monkey said: "I remember when this tree was the height of my raised hand and head." The bird said: "I remember to the right side of the snowy mountains there was a large nyagrodha tree; I ate fruit there and came here to defecate, which gave rise to this tree." Then the elephant placed the monkey on its head, and the monkey placed the bird on its shoulders, and they wandered through villages and hamlets. They spoke the verse as in the Manual. The first line is practicing respect; the second line reveals the benefit; the third is the present retribution; the fourth is the future result. The lines from "You..." down encourage compliance. The lines from "From now on..." down establish the regulation. Nowadays, the saṃgha does not distinguish between seniors and juniors; those of senior virtue and the newly ordained pay homage to each other; receiving the precepts merely splits the hours, and sitting the summer rains retreat vainly counts shallow or deep. It is deplorable that secular manners are thin and feelings shallow; one deeply grieves that the vinaya has collapsed and the Dharma decayed! Those with the mind to propagate and protect it should earnestly continue it.
