In the next section, in the Great Compassion Sūtra: it first recounts cultivating the cause. "Inclining" means exhausting one's mind; "turning aside" means stepping aside. The lines from "Because of this..." down next explain evoking the fruit. For example, when the Buddha was about to realize the Path, he bathed in the Nairañjanā River; his body was emaciated and could not support itself, which caused a tree to bend its branches to help the Buddha's body emerge; down to when he entered extinction, the twin trees turned white—such things as these. If insentient things are still like this, how much more so sentient beings! In the Ekottarika-āgama, it first shows the future retribution; the lines from "By means of..." down trace back to the past cause. In the Saṃyuktāgama, it admonishes the bhikṣus: the four assemblies are the objects of respect. "Restraining the sense faculties" means being respectful and prudent. "Long night" refers generally to the present and the future; "peace and happiness" applies generally to the mundane and supramundane.
