In the Ratnarāśi: the eight slightings stem from lacking shame, treating the virtuous with arrogance and slight—this is the causal mind. The eight dharmas listed below are all future retributions; or perhaps the sixth and seventh apply to both the present and the future. The lines from "Down to..." down explain that their virtue is shallow: a person who violates the precepts does not have a portion of even a patch of land. This is as the Brahma Net Sūtra says: they cannot walk on the king's land, nor drink the king's water; five thousand great ghosts constantly block their way, sweeping away their footprints and reviling them as great thieves, and so forth. Furthermore, as the Buddhadharma-kośa says, they cannot digest even a single cup of water or a single patched robe, how much less the four requisites! The reference to the previous chapter points to "Facing Offerings."
